Melbourne Victory A-League captain Carl Valeri has been handed a suspended $1000 fine for breaching the FFA national code of conduct.
Valeri was reprimanded by the governing body, although Football Federation Australia could not make clear for which statements he was punished.
In an AAP report on October 15, published in The Australian and elsewhere, the 31-year-old was quoted as criticising referee Peter Green for sending off teammate Leigh Broxham in the side's round-one draw with Adelaide United.
He also said foreign players brought a diving culture to the Australian competition, which referees needed to be alert to.
The FFA statement says the former Socceroo has taken full responsibility for his comments but has until November 6 to appeal the decision.
